Last Friday was Veterans Day, and I wanted to share a little about its history with you.
It was initially called “Armistice Day”, and Woodrow Wilson first recognized it following the end of World War 1 on the 11th of November in 1919. This date was chosen because the hostilities of the war ended in an armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of November in 1918.
In 1938, it became a national holiday under President Calvin Coolidge, and in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed it to Veterans Day, expanding its observance to honor all veterans.
Today, Veterans Day, is a tribute to all American veterans, both the dead and living, but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably – both in war and during times of peace.
Freedom isn’t free. So this week, (even though Veterans Day was last week), thank a veteran. If your parents served, your brother served, or your neighbor served, reach out and say thank you.

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States, where men were free.”
