One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Yoda. Yes, Yoda from Star Wars – “Try not. Do or do not.” I have heard many different versions of it, but the one I like the most is – “Do or do not. There is no try.”

Over the years, I have had a few conversations with people about this topic. I have heard people say, “It’s okay to try your best,” to which I still say no, it isn’t. Don’t try to do your best; just do your best. And if you fail, adjust and do it again, and again, and again.

I also say that you can try too hard sometimes. Too often, we think the solution is to work harder or work longer hours. But what if we just worked smarter?

I know some of you may be rolling your eyes right now thinking, my industry is different or my clients are unique. But I would guess that there is at least one thing you could work smarter on that would lead to you getting home earlier or feeling like you had a better work-life balance.

In the weeks ahead, think about one change (even if it feels small) that you could make to work smarter. It might be grouping together similar tasks, taking a break from multi-tasking, or building automations into your workflow.

If you are thinking this won’t work for you, it may be because change can be hard. But without change, there is no growth or progress. Change is good. It might hurt a little in the beginning, but it will pay off significant returns in the long run.

Life is good. – Jeff
